What employers in South Africa expect on a CV
Leave your ID number off
Older South African CVs often carried an ID number, date of birth, marital status and even health details. Leave the ID number off: it is exactly what fraudsters look for, and the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) expects organisations to collect only what they need. Date of birth and marital status are optional.
Two to three pages is normal
South African CVs often run to two or three A4 pages for experienced candidates. Keep recent roles detailed, shorten older ones, and put a short career summary at the top.
Give your licence code
For sales, field, logistics and many operations roles, a driver's licence is close to a requirement. Give the code, for example 'Code B (previously Code 08)', and mention your own transport if you have it.
Qualifications and professional bodies
Early in your career, list your National Senior Certificate (Matric) as well as any degree or diploma. If you studied abroad, a SAQA evaluation helps employers read your qualification. Registered professionals should name their body, such as ECSA for engineers, SAICA for chartered accountants or the HPCSA for health professionals.
References and Employment Equity
Many South African CVs end with two or three references, with names, roles and phone numbers, given with permission. Some ads are Employment Equity positions; employers usually collect what they need on their application form, so you do not need to add it to your CV unless an ad asks.

South African CV questions
Should I put my ID number on my CV?
No. Your ID number is valuable to fraudsters, and employers do not need it at the application stage. They ask for it when they run background checks or prepare an offer.
How long should a South African CV be?
Two to three A4 pages for most experienced candidates, and one to two for students and graduates. Detail recent roles and shorten older ones.
Should I include a photo?
It is not expected in most industries. Leave it off unless an ad asks for one, and if you include one, make it a recent professional headshot.
Should I list references on my CV?
It is common in South Africa to list two or three references at the end, with their permission. 'References available on request' is also accepted if space is tight.
