What employers in Hong Kong expect on a CV
Salary in the email, availability on the CV
Hong Kong job ads often ask for a 'full resume' with current and expected salary and your date of availability. Put the salary figures in your email or cover letter, where you can add context, and keep them off the CV: recruiters here warn that a last-drawn salary on the page can weaken your hand in negotiation. Close your profile summary with your notice period, for example 'Available on one month's notice'.
Name each language and its level
Ads often spell out the languages a role needs, typically English, Cantonese and Putonghua (Mandarin). Add each one separately in the Languages section with a level such as native, fluent or conversational, so the recruiter can tick them off against the ad.
Keep your HKID number off
Leave your Hong Kong Identity Card number off your CV. Under the Privacy Commissioner's Code of Practice on Human Resource Management, an employer should not take a copy of your HKID card until you have accepted an offer, and may collect the number from applicants only when a strict set of conditions is met.
Photo optional, personal details short
Many local CVs carry a small headshot, while some large recruitment agencies advise leaving the photo off. Recruiters also advise leaving out your age and marital status, and the Sex Discrimination Ordinance makes it unlawful for employers to discriminate on marital status or pregnancy. Your name, a +852 mobile, email, district and LinkedIn make a complete contact block.
Civil service jobs use form G.F. 340
Most civil service vacancies ask for the prescribed form G.F. 340 rather than a CV, and unless the ad says otherwise they accept online applications only. Keep your CV open while you fill in the form so job titles and dates match exactly.
Applying as a domestic helper
Helper job sites in Hong Kong ask for more personal detail than office roles, such as a clear photo, your age, marital status, children and start date. Whether you come from the Philippines, Indonesia or elsewhere, put your nationality in its own field and the rest in your summary, then list each employer with contract dates and duties such as childcare, elderly care, cooking and cleaning.

Hong Kong CV questions
CV or resume in Hong Kong?
People use the two words interchangeably here. You will hear 'CV' in conversation, while many ads ask you to send a 'full resume'. Whichever word the ad uses, send one or two A4 pages on your experience, education, skills and languages.
Do Hong Kong CVs need a photo?
No. A small headshot is common on local CVs, but some large recruitment agencies advise leaving it off. If you use one, pick a recent headshot in business wear against a plain backdrop. In CVFalcon you can add the photo or leave it out before each download.
Should I put my expected salary on my CV?
Usually not. When an ad asks for current and expected salary, give both in your email or cover letter so you can explain them, and keep the CV itself to your experience. Your notice period can go at the end of your profile summary.
How many pages should a Hong Kong CV be?
One page if you have under five years of experience, and up to two once your career is longer. Give the most room to your last few roles and cut early jobs to a single line.
Should I write my CV in English or Chinese?
English suits most professional roles, especially in finance, tech and multinational companies, and CVFalcon's templates are set up for English CVs. Some local employers and schools may ask for a Chinese version; in that case, follow the ad. Either way, list your languages with a level.
Should I put my HKID number on my CV?
