Why it works for Canadian applications

Letter size by default

Canadian employers print and view on Letter paper, 8.5 by 11 inches, so margins and page breaks land where they expect. A4 is one click away when you apply abroad.

Turn an overseas CV into a Canadian resume

Import a CV from PDF or Word, then leave the photo and personal fields empty. Newcomers keep their experience and drop the details Canadian employers do not want.

Readable by applicant tracking systems

Real, selectable text in a logical order, with nothing important hidden in images, so ATS software picks out your titles, dates and skills.

What Canadian employers expect on a resume

01

Resume for jobs, CV for academia

In English-speaking Canada, a resume is the one or two page document you send with a job application. CV usually means a longer academic record for research, teaching and some medical roles. In French, and so in much of Quebec, CV is the everyday word for both.

02

No photo, age or marital status

Human rights laws in Canada protect characteristics such as age, marital status and family status, and employers avoid information that could suggest bias. Leave off your photo, date of birth, marital status and nationality. Never put your Social Insurance Number on a resume.

03

Canadian spelling and a local address

Canadian spelling mixes British and American forms: colour and centre, but usually organize and analyze. Give your city and province, a Canadian phone number if you have one, and your LinkedIn profile.

04

One or two pages, results first

One page suits students and early-career candidates, and two is normal for experienced professionals. Start each bullet with an action verb and add numbers where you honestly can.

05

Work status and credentials for newcomers

If you are not a citizen or permanent resident, a line such as 'Open work permit, valid until 2027' answers the recruiter's first question. Show Canadian equivalents for foreign degrees when you have them, and note licensing progress in regulated professions such as engineering and nursing.

Canadian resume questions

Is a resume the same as a CV in Canada?

For most jobs, employers mean a resume: one or two pages focused on relevant experience. A CV in Canada usually means a longer academic document listing publications, teaching and research. French-speaking employers say CV for both.

Should I put a photo on a Canadian resume?

No. Photos are not expected, and many employers would rather not receive them. The photo field in CVFalcon is optional, so leave it empty for Canadian applications.

How long should a Canadian resume be?

One page for students and early-career candidates, two for most experienced professionals. Put your most relevant work on page one.

Do I need to include references?

No. Employers ask for references later in the process, and 'References available upon request' only uses up space. Keep a list of two or three referees ready.

Is this resume builder free?

Building and previewing your resume is free, in every template and with no sign-up. Downloading the PDF requires the CVFalcon Pass: $9 once, unlimited downloads and no subscription.
